Adventure 73 ~ Learning To Play Chess [Day 5]

Today I share my experiences of speed chessย (in the game I played, each player had a total allocation of 5 minutes)ย and learn my first 4 openings (strict combinations of moves).

Adventure 72 ~ Learning To Play Chess [Day 4]

Now I’m starting to get quite excited about chess! Last night I played my first full game ~ you can see how it ended in the image below today’s video (I am playing with the “black” pieces).

It’s only a few short days before “the big match” on Saturday, so I’m still taking the opportunity to learn some top tips from the rich treasure trove that is YouTube. Today I’m learning about the 3 types of opening moves.

Find out how I got on last night here :

Adventure 71 ~ Learning To Play Chess [Day 3]

Last night saw the second 15-minute burst of chess with my son. Last night I applied what I’d learned yesterday. Last night a massacre took place (you can probably work out which side took the hit from the “state of play” image below today’s video!)

Today I found this YouTube videoย about opening moves really helpful. It makes sense and I think it will be useful for “The Big Game” which is planned for saturday!

Adventure 70 ~ Learning To Play Chess [Day 2]

chessLast night I played my first game of chess with my son. We played for 15 minutes and the image shows how well it went for me : I am “white” – and I’ve already lost a knight!

I’m hoping for some improvement tonight, having watched a really helpful YouTube video. Now I know a key strategic principle which I should avoid violating at all costs. (I also stumbled across the term “castling” in this video. Further investigation reveals this to be even more complicated than the off-side rule in football, so I don’t think I’m going to take that move any further at the moment!)

I’ll be playing again tonight and I’ll be keeping my top tip to myself to until after we’ve gone head-to-head ๐Ÿ™‚ . I wonder if he’ll notice any difference …..

I am just going outside and may be some time.

Adventure 69 ~ Learning To Play Chess

My Space Odyssey has encouraged me to expand my imagination and grow my creative thinking. To support this development in my thinking, I’ve decided to learn to play chess! There seems to be a whole heap of benefits associated with playing this gameย and, even though my impression of chess is that it might be quite complicated, I am looking forward to squeezing my head through another wormhole ๐Ÿ™‚ .

Today I started out by learning the basic moves from this short YouTube video. Over the coming days I’ll be watching more video tutorials and playing too.

Adventure 68 ~ A Leap In Thinking

Screenshot (1)Today’s the last day of my Space Odyssey : I get to grips with String Theory and I reflect on my own learning process. A new line of questioning emerges for me too. It’s a different type of enquiry ~ ย it’s a question that exists at a new level and reflects a new order of thinking . I think I only this new question as a result of going through the process of learning about theoretical physics.

Grappling with questions about cosmology and theoretical physics has had the impact of pushing my mind through a metaphorical wormhole. I now find myself in a new universe where new laws of thinking might apply. I wonder what I’m going to discover in this new place? Whatever I discover, I’m certain it’s going to be thanks to “Wormhole Thinking” ๐Ÿ™‚ .

Adventure 67 ~ My First Visit To A Salvage Yard

salvage yardWhilst my mind is still engaged with cosmic matters, I hurtled back to Earth for a brief moment today so I could visit a salvage yard for the very first time.

I have to say, the yard had all the qualities of a black hole : it seemed to have sucked in all sorts of ย objects and I’m pretty certain that there are many salvage hunters who have entered the yard and never been seen since ๐Ÿ™‚ .

You can watch the peat cutting tool (known as a peat spade or a turf spade) in action below. By the way, this video was filmed in my local area in Northern Ireland!

Adventure 66 ~ The Theories Of Multiverse

Today I’m exploring “the multiverse” ~ a theory which proposes that our universe is not the only universe! Watch me as I try to get my head around three theoretical models : Bubble Universe theory ; Membrane theory and Many Worlds theory!

Adventure 65 ~ What is exotic matter?

Today I’m exploring the idea of exotic matter and how it makes wormholes traversable ๐Ÿ™‚ . By the way, my head seems to be acclimatising and this is, oddly enough, all beginning to make sense to me!

I am just going outside and may be some time.

Adventure 63 ~ Einstein’s Theory Of General Relativity

Four lines of enquiry opened up yesterday as a result of grappling with the idea of wormholes. One of those lines was : what is the theory of general relativity? Today I attempt to understand, and describe, this theory which Einstein published in 1915. (I’d just like to say that my head is beginning to hurt!) ๐Ÿ™‚
