Adventure 194 ~ A Guided Tour Of The Places Which Inspired ‘The Faerie Thorn’

For today’s adventure, I’m giving you a guided tour of the real places which have inspired my faerie story, ‘The Faerie Thorn’! I’ve found that being in the real setting, or imagining the real setting, has really helped the story to take on a life of its own.

(Oh – and are you wondering how well the gifts I left for the faeries were received? …..)

There are 2 videos today ~ the first video is filmed on Man Donaghy’s farm and the second at the Gortanuey Bridge where the trolls live.

Adventure 193 ~ Thank The Faeries Properly

Fairy drinkIt’s a holiday weekend here in Northern Ireland, so I’ve been away camping on the farm, close to the faerie thorn. The faerie story I am writing is still unfolding and it surprises me at every turn!

For today’s adventure, I took Leslie’s advice (I interviewed her last monday about the faeries) and went along to the faerie thorn to offer thanks for the story they have woven for me.

If you’ve been following my story, this short film may remind you of one of the characters……

Adventure 189 ~ Write A Faerie Story [1]

elfAfter I interviewed Jackie yesterday, she asked me what my next adventure would be. I couldn’t answer her as I don’t have an adventure plan ~ I just wait for the next impulse to arrive! This morning I woke up with the coat-tails of a faerie story to hang on to. I could say that I have no idea where it came from….

Adventure 188 ~ Learn More About Connecting To The World Around Me [And Within Me]

leslieWell, I have to say that my faerie and tree adventures have worn me out .. and piqued my curiosity!

For today’s adventure, I get to talk to two experts who offer insights and tips for taking my adventures further.

First of all I talked to Leslie Marsh. Leslie is a shamanic bard and practitioner who is steeped in folkloric traditions and is used to connecting with the fae.

jackie StewartThen I spoke with Jackie Stewart, a Soul Alchemist who helps people to connect with nature.

I have posted both live-streamed interviews below. Jackie mentions a book in our chat, ‘ The Secret Teachings of Plants’ by Stephen Harrod Buhner. You can find this book here .

More About Faeries ~ Leslie tells us about what faeries are, how to connect with faerie energy and explains how we might benefit from opening up to this energy.

More About Connecting With Nature ~ Jackie explains some of the key benefits of being connected to nature, she offers tips about how to make the connection and describes how we can learn to feel the “pull” of certain plants and trees.

Adventure 187 ~ See A Faerie

The fairy thorn tree on our farmOkay. So you think I’ve lost the plot, right? Well, it just so happens that I’ve discovered something called a fairy thorn on our farm (it’s the one in this picture). In this part of the world such trees (lone hawthorns) are revered and feared! You can read more about the tree lore of the hawthorn here.

Some people say that faeries live in the roots of these trees and that the tree is a gateway to the Otherworld.

I watched a documentary about faeries in which lots of information was given about where they live and how to “see” them and so I decided to go to the tree on our farm and take a look for myself!

Apparently, optimum faerie- spying time is at twilight. This meant that I visited the tree both in the late evening and the early morning.

To facilitate this faerie vigil, I camped with my dog in the back of my van. After the evening twilight visit, I laid out everything I would need for the morning twilight visit : my hat, my head-torch and my wellies. When the alarm went off at 4am, sparx blogeverything was in its place except for my hat (it’s my favourite, by the way). Even though I have emptied the van, I still cannot find it…… 😛 .

This adventure has been brilliant ~ I’ve learned so much about local folk lore and it’s helped me feel more connected to the place in which I live. My surroundings seem more colourful to me now 🙂 .

Adventure 186 ~ Feel The Energy Of A Tree

TEvening ash on the farmoday I try my hand at connecting with, and feeling the energy of, a tree. I use everything I’ve learned from my animal communication course (Asia Voight suggests that her method of communication can be used to communicate with any living thing) and I also try an Aboriginal ‘deep listening’ practice called Dadirri  in an attempt to connect with the tree.

The ash trees on the farm have been drawing my attention for some time now. So I found a “partner” ash in a quiet away-from-it-all corner and spent some time with it.

You can see how I got on in today’s video. You can get the full low down on ash trees here (it’s really interesting to read about the folklore of trees!)
